-mails that paula broadwell sent to a tampa woman, who knew the two generals, david petraeus and john allen even as the president for the first time today spoke about the scandal. at his news conference, the president went out of his way to praise petraeus. >> he has provided this country an extraordinary service. we are safer because of the work that david petraeus has done. >> reporter: as paula broadwell remained in washington and staying with her brother and still not talking, officials say the investigation was triggered in may, when general john allen received an e-mail called "kelley patrol." sources say they said stay away from her, sources close to him said she could ruin him allen she had not sent the e-mail but was concerned she was stalked or electronically hacked, referring to a meeting that she and general allen that she and general allen scheduled. sources say they received four different e-mails, telling jill, she is up to no good, asking him, do you know what your wife is doing when she has different with general petraeus? officials say the e-mail had enough inappropriate inform
you see this? >> senator john mccain and senator lindsey graham both said today that they want to have watergate-style hearings on the attack at the u.s. consulate in benghazi. and that if you nominate susan rice for secretary of state, they will do everything in their power to block her nomination. as senator graham said, he simply doesn't trust ambassador rice after what she said about benghazi. i would like your reaction to that and would those threats deter from making a nomination like that? >> first of all, i'm not going to comment at this point on various nominations that i'll put forward to fill out my cabinet for the second term. those are things that are still being discussed. but let me say specifically about susan rice. she has done exemplary work. she has represented the united states and our interests in the united nations with skill and professionalism and toughness and grace. as i've said before, she made an appearance at the request of the white house in which she gave her best understanding of the intelligence that had been provided to her. if senator mccain and senat
of -- besmirch her reputation is outrageous. >> senator john mccain was trying to reach out to the president and get answers. what did you think of that? >> i think it is unfortunate because first of all if she had nothing to do with benghazi or the u.n ambassador she shouldn't have been out on all of the sunday shows that some five days afterwards stating that it was a spontaneous demonstration that was triggered by a hateful video that turned out to be absolutely false. there was month demonstration. i don't know how you logically assume that she had nothing to do with benghazi since it was the white house that had her on all of the sunday shows second of all, i am not trying to get into a mano-e-mano about the united states. i am trying to find answers that resulted in the death of 4 brave americans. and obviously there have been so many conflicting stories and so much conflicting information including the president of the united states at the end of the second debate with mitt romney saying i said it was a terrorist attack in the rose garden on the 12th when that was not true. that night

. john, what information can you bring us on the situation there today? >> you have been seeing the rocket arriving in israel this morning. we have actually seen a lot of israeli airstrikes as well within the last 15 minutes. a lot of explosions north of gaza city. that has been going on all morning. five palestinians were killed today. they are all hamas fighters, which brings the total to 13 cents yesterday including civilians, children, and a young baby. all of its board yesterday with israel killing -- targeting one leaderssenior hamas whose funeral is taking place today. it is a potential flashpoint. there are a few senior hamas officials here but i expect many of them are in hiding in underground bunkers. it started out as a relatively quiet night but then things started to pickup. we have seen a vapor trail of palestinian rockets being fired across the border all morning. there have been casualty's. in gaza, more casualties at. at least three militants killed today. there have been civilians killed as well in the course of the past 24 hours including children and a young
